Dr Aham Uko, the Abia State Commissioner for Finance, has responded to a report making the rounds wherein he is blamed for requesting the capture of certain beneficiaries in his office.
There was a report on Thursday that Police in Abia State captured two retired people in Umuahia for supposedly sorting out a dissent against supposed express government’s inability to pay their benefits back payments.
Names of the retired people were given as Daniel Amugo and Chukwuemeka Augustus, the Chairman and Secretary of a gathering, called Abia State Concerned Pensioners.
The Vice-Chairman of the gathering, John Kalu, had told correspondents that police captured the two individuals after their gathering with the Commissioner for Finance, Dr Aham Uko, in his office.
The chief, in an announcement on Friday, nonetheless, denied holding any gathering with retired people in his office.
His announcement included, “My consideration has been attracted to distributions in an area of the media charging that I met with a gathering of beneficiaries on Thursday, January 23, 2019, in my office, and thusly welcomed security specialists to capture them.
“I wish to state, unafraid of logical inconsistency, that I didn’t meet with the said beneficiaries and never requested the capture of any of them.
“The story as distributed is bogus and vindictive as I was engaged with gatherings outside my office on the said day and just read regarding the implied gathering with the retired people from the media.
“It is imperative to bring up that following the mandate of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, we have organized customary installment of retired people to guarantee that they get their due alongside different laborers in the express each month.
“There is, in this way, no reason for me to arrange the capture of any beneficiary or some other reputable Abian so far as that is concerned.”
In the mean time, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the beneficiaries were captured for mimicking the authority of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Abia.
Ogbonna said that the direction got an appeal blaming them for pantomime.
He said that the issue was being explored, including that the national initiative of NUP had repudiated the dissidents.
